Narrative:
Landing effected during turbulent, gust crosswind conditions. Aircraft touched down hard on right gear with some side load resulting in landing gear weldment failure allowing lower right wing contact with runway. Directional control was maintained for approximately 400 ft, however, gradual drift to left resulted in aircraft leaving hard surface where wheels dug into soft soil causing landing gear to fold to left side. Aircraft stopped at this point with moderate damage to gear, belly cowl, and propeller. No damage to facilities or personnel.

Title: EXPERIMENTAL BIPLANE HAS XWIND GUSTS ON LNDG. LOSS OF ACFT CTL.
Narrative: LNDG EFFECTED DURING TURBULENT, GUST XWIND CONDITIONS. ACFT TOUCHED DOWN HARD ON R GEAR WITH SOME SIDE LOAD RESULTING IN LNDG GEAR WELDMENT FAILURE ALLOWING LOWER R WING CONTACT WITH RWY. DIRECTIONAL CTL WAS MAINTAINED FOR APPROX 400 FT, HOWEVER, GRADUAL DRIFT TO LEFT RESULTED IN ACFT LEAVING HARD SURFACE WHERE WHEELS DUG INTO SOFT SOIL CAUSING LNDG GEAR TO FOLD TO L SIDE. ACFT STOPPED AT THIS POINT WITH MODERATE DAMAGE TO GEAR, BELLY COWL, AND PROP. NO DAMAGE TO FACILITIES OR PERSONNEL.
