Narrative:
I made a flight from brackett airport to fullerton. Upon reaching 1700 ft MSL, I inadvertently entered IMC. In order to maintain aircraft control and safety, I elected to climb through the ceiling (which was approximately 3000 ft). I proceeded directly to seal beach VOR at 5000 ft where I requested the ILS into long beach. Upon reaching 1000 ft MSL, I cancelled my clearance and proceeded to fullerton in VFR conditions. Had I received a WX briefing, I would have known to file IFR. 2 days later, in the same aircraft, I departed catalina at approximately XA30 local. I again entered IMC briefly. After departing catalina I entered IMC approximately 1800 ft MSL and cleared the cloud at approximately 2000 ft MSL. There was not enough terrain clearance to skirt the clouds, I elected (for safety) to climb above the thin clouds. The alternative was to depart towards the north, however, the winds were very unfavorable towards the north.

Title: ON 2 SEPARATE OCCASIONS, LOW TIME INST PLT CLBED THROUGH IMC CONDITIONS WITHOUT ATC CLRNC.
Narrative: I MADE A FLT FROM BRACKETT ARPT TO FULLERTON. UPON REACHING 1700 FT MSL, I INADVERTENTLY ENTERED IMC. IN ORDER TO MAINTAIN ACFT CTL AND SAFETY, I ELECTED TO CLB THROUGH THE CEILING (WHICH WAS APPROX 3000 FT). I PROCEEDED DIRECTLY TO SEAL BEACH VOR AT 5000 FT WHERE I REQUESTED THE ILS INTO LONG BEACH. UPON REACHING 1000 FT MSL, I CANCELLED MY CLRNC AND PROCEEDED TO FULLERTON IN VFR CONDITIONS. HAD I RECEIVED A WX BRIEFING, I WOULD HAVE KNOWN TO FILE IFR. 2 DAYS LATER, IN THE SAME ACFT, I DEPARTED CATALINA AT APPROX XA30 LCL. I AGAIN ENTERED IMC BRIEFLY. AFTER DEPARTING CATALINA I ENTERED IMC APPROX 1800 FT MSL AND CLRED THE CLOUD AT APPROX 2000 FT MSL. THERE WAS NOT ENOUGH TERRAIN CLRNC TO SKIRT THE CLOUDS, I ELECTED (FOR SAFETY) TO CLB ABOVE THE THIN CLOUDS. THE ALTERNATIVE WAS TO DEPART TOWARDS THE N, HOWEVER, THE WINDS WERE VERY UNFAVORABLE TOWARDS THE N.
