Narrative:
After engine start we received an ECAM message 'cabin pressurization system 1 fault.' we followed prescribed procedure and cleared the fault. Later, while descending from FL310 to FL290, the cabin started to climb, I asked for lower but now the cabin started climbing rapidly. I declared an emergency and made a rapid descent to 10000 ft. The masks deployed. The protective lens cover on the oxygen mask restr my view of the flight mode annunciator at first and it was a few mins before I recognized the problem and removed the cover. Since we were only a little over 100 mi from mke we continued to mke.
