Narrative:
While cruising at 8000 ft center called us to check our altimeter because he showed us 100 ft low. Altimeter setting was ok and we showed to be at 8000 ft. We noticed some traffic around us on our TCASII display. Nothing unusual. A couple mins later we got an RA of 'climb, traffic' (pop-up traffic?). First officer climbed plus or minus 300-400 ft and the TCASII stopped yelling at us. I advised center about our TCASII climb. No response! Again, I told center about TCASII climb. This time we got a response. Later we were cleared to 6000 ft. We never saw the traffic. At 6000 ft I called center to check our altitude readout. He answered: 'I show 6200 ft.' seconds later we were handed off to approach control and again I asked for an altitude readout. '6000 ft' approach control told us. Was center trying to cover up that traffic or what? We'll never know I guess.

Narrative: WHILE CRUISING AT 8000 FT CTR CALLED US TO CHK OUR ALTIMETER BECAUSE HE SHOWED US 100 FT LOW. ALTIMETER SETTING WAS OK AND WE SHOWED TO BE AT 8000 FT. WE NOTICED SOME TFC AROUND US ON OUR TCASII DISPLAY. NOTHING UNUSUAL. A COUPLE MINS LATER WE GOT AN RA OF 'CLB, TFC' (POP-UP TFC?). FO CLBED PLUS OR MINUS 300-400 FT AND THE TCASII STOPPED YELLING AT US. I ADVISED CTR ABOUT OUR TCASII CLB. NO RESPONSE! AGAIN, I TOLD CTR ABOUT TCASII CLB. THIS TIME WE GOT A RESPONSE. LATER WE WERE CLRED TO 6000 FT. WE NEVER SAW THE TFC. AT 6000 FT I CALLED CTR TO CHK OUR ALT READOUT. HE ANSWERED: 'I SHOW 6200 FT.' SECONDS LATER WE WERE HANDED OFF TO APCH CTL AND AGAIN I ASKED FOR AN ALT READOUT. '6000 FT' APCH CTL TOLD US. WAS CTR TRYING TO COVER UP THAT TFC OR WHAT? WE'LL NEVER KNOW I GUESS.
