Narrative:
Touchdown on runway 2 on main landing gears. Slight bounce experienced. Added additional power and maintained yoke- back position. On subsequent touchdown the nose gear contacted runway first and apparently collapsed with nose descending through horizon. Reflex action was to keep yoke-back completely, which resulted in subsequent bounce. Directional control was maintained. Aircraft slowed. Propeller touched runway and aircraft stopped with spinner and lower front cowling touching runway. Fuel and switches -- including all electrical switches -- turned off. Passenger and pilot exited aircraft. Prior to exiting, pilot called on unicom for emergency vehicle to respond and removed fire extinguisher from rack. No fire or smoke. Emergency vehicle arrived within 3 or 4 mins. Aircraft lifted by spinner on forklift and towed to tie-down. Use of full flaps may have contributed to nose low position when power applied after initial bounce. Density altitude of 8400 ft may also have contributed to relatively unresponsive aircraft when power applied to keep nose up and to effect gentle touchdown.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: PVT PLT OF AN SMA SEL ACFT BOUNCED DURING LNDG AND COLLAPSED THE NOSEWHEEL.
Narrative: TOUCHDOWN ON RWY 2 ON MAIN LNDG GEARS. SLIGHT BOUNCE EXPERIENCED. ADDED ADDITIONAL PWR AND MAINTAINED YOKE- BACK POS. ON SUBSEQUENT TOUCHDOWN THE NOSE GEAR CONTACTED RWY FIRST AND APPARENTLY COLLAPSED WITH NOSE DSNDING THROUGH HORIZON. REFLEX ACTION WAS TO KEEP YOKE-BACK COMPLETELY, WHICH RESULTED IN SUBSEQUENT BOUNCE. DIRECTIONAL CTL WAS MAINTAINED. ACFT SLOWED. PROP TOUCHED RWY AND ACFT STOPPED WITH SPINNER AND LOWER FRONT COWLING TOUCHING RWY. FUEL AND SWITCHES -- INCLUDING ALL ELECTRICAL SWITCHES -- TURNED OFF. PAX AND PLT EXITED ACFT. PRIOR TO EXITING, PLT CALLED ON UNICOM FOR EMER VEHICLE TO RESPOND AND REMOVED FIRE EXTINGUISHER FROM RACK. NO FIRE OR SMOKE. EMER VEHICLE ARRIVED WITHIN 3 OR 4 MINS. ACFT LIFTED BY SPINNER ON FORKLIFT AND TOWED TO TIE-DOWN. USE OF FULL FLAPS MAY HAVE CONTRIBUTED TO NOSE LOW POS WHEN PWR APPLIED AFTER INITIAL BOUNCE. DENSITY ALT OF 8400 FT MAY ALSO HAVE CONTRIBUTED TO RELATIVELY UNRESPONSIVE ACFT WHEN PWR APPLIED TO KEEP NOSE UP AND TO EFFECT GENTLE TOUCHDOWN.
