Narrative:

Air carrier X cleared runway heading 125 degrees to 5000 ft. As soon as contact with departure control, cleared to 6000 ft. Turns by departure control to 170 degrees then 260 degrees. On a 260 degree heading and passing 5400 ft we had a TCASII alert to reduce rate of climb. At this time departure control advised us of air carrier Y at 2 O'clock, 600 ft above us. With a visual on air carrier Y we reduced power and descended back to 5000 ft. Air carrier Y past overhead 1000 ft above. When queried about the altitude we were assigned, the controller advised he wanted us at 5000 ft. Then we asked that the tapes be saved, which later indicated our clearance to 6000 ft.
