Narrative:
On jun/tue/93 I was told to send an a&P to columbus, oh, to fix or defer the roll spoilers on an mdt. I was told that the problem was that the roll spoiler outboard ground caution light was illuminated. I sent an a&P down to check out and defer the system. He was unable to duplicate any problem but we, by phone conversation, decided to defer the system in case the pilots had a problem on the morning departure. I did not want the plane to be stuck there. The plane overnighted in dtw on jun/thu/93. When reviewing the logbook I discovered I had been given misinfo from maintenance control about which light had illuminated. The roll spoiler outboard hydraulic light was the light that actually was written up and this would not be something you would defer. The hydraulic caution light problem had already been fixed by this time. This problem was caused by a lack of communication between the pilot and maintenance control. The way to correct this type of problem would be to require a pilot to facsimile any write-ups that happen at an out-station to the maintenance base instead of a verbal radio or phone call.

Title: MECH ALLOWED ACFT TO FLY NOT REALIZING THAT THE ACTUAL MECHANICAL PROB WAS NOT TO BE DEFERRED.
