Narrative:

Air carrier Y on our airway was apparently given clearance to same altitude as air carrier X (northbound). Area is not radar controled and has spotty VHF and HF ATC coverage. We relayed the sbound air carrier Y position report for him due to poor VHF/HF reception. Realized we had both been given FL310 and we visually saw each other at least 50 mi out with landing lights. Before ATC could straighten situation out, air carrier X climbed to FL320 while air carrier Y descended to FL300 with no other traffic between us. Passed safely laterally and horizontally, both visually and on TCASII. Relayed this to ATC, who cleared us to proper altitudes once we assured him we were both clear.
