Narrative:
While being vectored for a visual approach to runway 16R at maf from the northeast, the airport was pointed out at '10 O'clock' by approach control. An airport was observed at that position and reported. Approach cleared the flight for a visual approach to runway 16R. We turned toward the airport. Unable to confirm the airport as maf by either navaids (VOR 16R was set up) nor by the airport/runway layout. We requested a 270 degree turn left to re- enter base farther north of the facility. This was approved by maf tower. After the turn, I then could see downtown midland's skyline and realized the airport was not maf. I ordered a go around which was occurring when tower advised us we were lined up toward midland airpark, approximately 4 mi east of maf. He also instructed us to go around and we were then vectored to final at maf. We landed normally at maf.

Title: WHILE BEING VECTORED FOR A VISUAL APCH, FLC OF AN MLG ACR ACFT INADVERTENTLY STARTED THE APCH TO A NEARBY ARPT. WRONG ARPT APCH.
Narrative: WHILE BEING VECTORED FOR A VISUAL APCH TO RWY 16R AT MAF FROM THE NE, THE ARPT WAS POINTED OUT AT '10 O'CLOCK' BY APCH CTL. AN ARPT WAS OBSERVED AT THAT POS AND RPTED. APCH CLRED THE FLT FOR A VISUAL APCH TO RWY 16R. WE TURNED TOWARD THE ARPT. UNABLE TO CONFIRM THE ARPT AS MAF BY EITHER NAVAIDS (VOR 16R WAS SET UP) NOR BY THE ARPT/RWY LAYOUT. WE REQUESTED A 270 DEG TURN L TO RE- ENTER BASE FARTHER N OF THE FACILITY. THIS WAS APPROVED BY MAF TWR. AFTER THE TURN, I THEN COULD SEE DOWNTOWN MIDLAND'S SKYLINE AND REALIZED THE ARPT WAS NOT MAF. I ORDERED A GAR WHICH WAS OCCURRING WHEN TWR ADVISED US WE WERE LINED UP TOWARD MIDLAND AIRPARK, APPROX 4 MI E OF MAF. HE ALSO INSTRUCTED US TO GAR AND WE WERE THEN VECTORED TO FINAL AT MAF. WE LANDED NORMALLY AT MAF.
