Narrative:
Aircraft stopped at gate and parking brake set. Lights on, brake pressure ok (3100 pounds). Started the after parking SOP's when I felt a bump. At that time I noticed the aircraft had rolled forward and the left engine had struck the jetway. Checked parking brake. The lights still indicated the parking brake was set, however, the brake pressure gauge now indicated 1000 psi. Turned electrical hydraulic pumps back on and pressure returned to normal. The main factor that contributed to this incident is the ramp lighting in the air carrier a, air carrier B terminal ramp area. The lights are so bright and are aimed so that they flood the cockpit with bright light. This, along with the light to moderate rain on the cockpit windows, diffused the view out of the cockpit to such an extent that slow movement of the aircraft was undetectable. The color of the building also blended in with the general color further hindering detection of movement.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: LGT ACR ACFT ROLLED INTO JETWAY AFTER PARKING DUE TO A LOSS OF SUFFICIENT HYD PRESSURE TO HOLD THE ACFT BY THE PARKING BRAKE.
Narrative: ACFT STOPPED AT GATE AND PARKING BRAKE SET. LIGHTS ON, BRAKE PRESSURE OK (3100 LBS). STARTED THE AFTER PARKING SOP'S WHEN I FELT A BUMP. AT THAT TIME I NOTICED THE ACFT HAD ROLLED FORWARD AND THE L ENG HAD STRUCK THE JETWAY. CHKED PARKING BRAKE. THE LIGHTS STILL INDICATED THE PARKING BRAKE WAS SET, HOWEVER, THE BRAKE PRESSURE GAUGE NOW INDICATED 1000 PSI. TURNED ELECTRICAL HYD PUMPS BACK ON AND PRESSURE RETURNED TO NORMAL. THE MAIN FACTOR THAT CONTRIBUTED TO THIS INCIDENT IS THE RAMP LIGHTING IN THE ACR A, ACR B TERMINAL RAMP AREA. THE LIGHTS ARE SO BRIGHT AND ARE AIMED SO THAT THEY FLOOD THE COCKPIT WITH BRIGHT LIGHT. THIS, ALONG WITH THE LIGHT TO MODERATE RAIN ON THE COCKPIT WINDOWS, DIFFUSED THE VIEW OUT OF THE COCKPIT TO SUCH AN EXTENT THAT SLOW MOVEMENT OF THE ACFT WAS UNDETECTABLE. THE COLOR OF THE BUILDING ALSO BLENDED IN WITH THE GENERAL COLOR FURTHER HINDERING DETECTION OF MOVEMENT.
