Narrative:
Aircraft was stopped at hold short line for runway 26L, kgrr, when I heard cleared, and taxied onto runway, visually checked the runway was clear of other traffic that had just landed, and advanced the power levers for takeoff. Takeoff roll was 6000 ft plus, due to aircraft being heavy and air temperature of 88 degrees F. After rotation and gear retraction tower then informed us we did not receive a takeoff clearance. Neither pilot could remember an into position and hold clearance. Did not question the tower controller. We just acknowledged the frequency change to departure and continued the flight. There was no conflict with any other traffic visually or on TCASII and I wonder why it took tower so long to wake up to the fact that we were on takeoff roll without a clearance if that was in fact what happened. In the future I will pay much closer attention to what the controller is saying. I also recommended only using the word 'cleared' for takeoff or landing clrncs and not in the context of 'position and hold.'
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: UNAUTH TKOF BY CPR JET.
Narrative: ACFT WAS STOPPED AT HOLD SHORT LINE FOR RWY 26L, KGRR, WHEN I HEARD CLRED, AND TAXIED ONTO RWY, VISUALLY CHKED THE RWY WAS CLR OF OTHER TFC THAT HAD JUST LANDED, AND ADVANCED THE PWR LEVERS FOR TKOF. TKOF ROLL WAS 6000 FT PLUS, DUE TO ACFT BEING HVY AND AIR TEMP OF 88 DEGS F. AFTER ROTATION AND GEAR RETRACTION TWR THEN INFORMED US WE DID NOT RECEIVE A TKOF CLRNC. NEITHER PLT COULD REMEMBER AN INTO POS AND HOLD CLRNC. DID NOT QUESTION THE TWR CTLR. WE JUST ACKNOWLEDGED THE FREQ CHANGE TO DEP AND CONTINUED THE FLT. THERE WAS NO CONFLICT WITH ANY OTHER TFC VISUALLY OR ON TCASII AND I WONDER WHY IT TOOK TWR SO LONG TO WAKE UP TO THE FACT THAT WE WERE ON TKOF ROLL WITHOUT A CLRNC IF THAT WAS IN FACT WHAT HAPPENED. IN THE FUTURE I WILL PAY MUCH CLOSER ATTN TO WHAT THE CTLR IS SAYING. I ALSO RECOMMENDED ONLY USING THE WORD 'CLRED' FOR TKOF OR LNDG CLRNCS AND NOT IN THE CONTEXT OF 'POS AND HOLD.'
