Narrative:
Departed lit runway 18. At approximately 250 ft AGL, piston went through case of #2 cylinder. Oil on windscreen. Began immediate left turn towards airport, airspeed 120 KTS. Landed power off runway 4. Tower had just advised contact departure. Advised tower of problem and intention to land. Reaction was automatic due to training. Any delay would have resulted in off airport landing. Small aircraft aircraft and engine with 220 hours since major overhaul. No prior indication of problem. Moral: train, practice and be ready.

Title: SMA ENG BLOWS A JUG, QUICK TURN AND LAND ON OTHER RWY.
Narrative: DEPARTED LIT RWY 18. AT APPROX 250 FT AGL, PISTON WENT THROUGH CASE OF #2 CYLINDER. OIL ON WINDSCREEN. BEGAN IMMEDIATE L TURN TOWARDS ARPT, AIRSPD 120 KTS. LANDED PWR OFF RWY 4.
