Narrative:

Scheduled air carrier passenger flight from fnt to lan with continuing service to ord. Numerous thunderstorms and rainshowers in the area, flew through quite a bit of heavy rain en route lan. On letdown to lan, established on the localizer (ILS 10R), just getting ready to intercept the GS, the left engine began surging. Torque fluctuating from approximately 500 pounds to 3000 pounds. Reduction of power lever and propeller would not help problem. Engine surging continuously. Left engine shutdown in-flight. Declared missed approach. Emergency checklists and normal checklists complied with. Due to inclement WX in lan and approach WX into lan, diverted to fnt (also company maintenance base). Uneventful southeast approach and landing into fnt. Suspected fuel control unit failure on left engine. Actions of crew including flight attendant were excellent. Due to CRM, 1 person flying the aircraft, the other handling checklists, radio, etc. This situation was fairly easy to deal with. CRM does work with a crew that works together.
