Narrative:
The student entered the traffic pattern at felts field and apparently did not receive or understand the radio call from the tower telling the student to give way to an aircraft in distress (rough engine). The student then entered the traffic pattern and did not follow another aircraft in the pattern, and proceeded to start his crosswind leg while another aircraft was on his crosswind leg farther up the upwind leg. The student eventually exited the traffic pattern to return to the base of operations. Felts field tower called the office and informed the instructor of the incident. The problem stemmed from the fact that the student did not understand the instructions given to him by felts field tower to evade and give way to the aircraft in distress. The student cut in front of the aircraft in distress and subsequently put both of them in danger. If a more structured communication vocabulary were established, then it is possible this event would have been unworthy of reporting. The student has been made aware of his actions and is presently undergoing intense communications training and is purchasing a scanner to facilitate the learning process.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: STUDENT PLT OF AN SMA SEL TRAINING ACFT INADVERTENTLY CUT IN FRONT OF AN ACFT IN DISTRESS WHEN ENTERING THE TFC PATTERN AFTER BEING TOLD TO GIVE AWAY TO THE DISTRESSED ACFT.
Narrative: THE STUDENT ENTERED THE TFC PATTERN AT FELTS FIELD AND APPARENTLY DID NOT RECEIVE OR UNDERSTAND THE RADIO CALL FROM THE TWR TELLING THE STUDENT TO GIVE WAY TO AN ACFT IN DISTRESS (ROUGH ENG). THE STUDENT THEN ENTERED THE TFC PATTERN AND DID NOT FOLLOW ANOTHER ACFT IN THE PATTERN, AND PROCEEDED TO START HIS XWIND LEG WHILE ANOTHER ACFT WAS ON HIS XWIND LEG FARTHER UP THE UPWIND LEG. THE STUDENT EVENTUALLY EXITED THE TFC PATTERN TO RETURN TO THE BASE OF OPS. FELTS FIELD TWR CALLED THE OFFICE AND INFORMED THE INSTRUCTOR OF THE INCIDENT. THE PROB STEMMED FROM THE FACT THAT THE STUDENT DID NOT UNDERSTAND THE INSTRUCTIONS GIVEN TO HIM BY FELTS FIELD TWR TO EVADE AND GIVE WAY TO THE ACFT IN DISTRESS. THE STUDENT CUT IN FRONT OF THE ACFT IN DISTRESS AND SUBSEQUENTLY PUT BOTH OF THEM IN DANGER. IF A MORE STRUCTURED COM VOCABULARY WERE ESTABLISHED, THEN IT IS POSSIBLE THIS EVENT WOULD HAVE BEEN UNWORTHY OF RPTING. THE STUDENT HAS BEEN MADE AWARE OF HIS ACTIONS AND IS PRESENTLY UNDERGOING INTENSE COMS TRAINING AND IS PURCHASING A SCANNER TO FACILITATE THE LEARNING PROCESS.
