Narrative:
On aug/wed/93 I was captain of air carrier flight sdf-cvg. We were cleared for takeoff. Engines were spooled, power set, and takeoff begun. After power established and aircraft had rolled about 200 yards, aircraft began to drift to right side of runway. Nosewheel steering through the rudder pedals did not appear to be effective as aircraft continued to drift. I aborted takeoff at about 40 KTS. After clearing the runway and checking all system, trim, surface winds, etc (everything was ok), I decided to try again. After carefully lining up and setting power, the aircraft rolled straight ahead and then began drifting right. The first officer called out 'it's doing it again!' I started to retard the throttles and simultaneously realized I had rudder/nosewheel steering effectiveness. I elected to continue reestablished takeoff power and continued uneventfully. Subsequent takeoffs from other airports uneventful. Maintenance at cvg found no problems.

Title: AN ACR MLG ABORTED ITS TKOF BECAUSE OF APPARENT STEERING PROBS. THE SECOND TKOF ATTEMPT WAS SUCCESSFUL.
Narrative: ON AUG/WED/93 I WAS CAPT OF ACR FLT SDF-CVG. WE WERE CLRED FOR TKOF. ENGS WERE SPOOLED, PWR SET, AND TKOF BEGUN. AFTER PWR ESTABLISHED AND ACFT HAD ROLLED ABOUT 200 YARDS, ACFT BEGAN TO DRIFT TO R SIDE OF RWY. NOSEWHEEL STEERING THROUGH THE RUDDER PEDALS DID NOT APPEAR TO BE EFFECTIVE AS ACFT CONTINUED TO DRIFT. I ABORTED TKOF AT ABOUT 40 KTS. AFTER CLRING THE RWY AND CHKING ALL SYS, TRIM, SURFACE WINDS, ETC (EVERYTHING WAS OK), I DECIDED TO TRY AGAIN. AFTER CAREFULLY LINING UP AND SETTING PWR, THE ACFT ROLLED STRAIGHT AHEAD AND THEN BEGAN DRIFTING R. THE FO CALLED OUT 'IT'S DOING IT AGAIN!' I STARTED TO RETARD THE THROTTLES AND SIMULTANEOUSLY REALIZED I HAD RUDDER/NOSEWHEEL STEERING EFFECTIVENESS. I ELECTED TO CONTINUE REESTABLISHED TKOF PWR AND CONTINUED UNEVENTFULLY.
