Narrative:
On flight from casper, wy, to fort bridger, wy, via lander, wy, oil filler cover not properly tightened. After 1 1/2 hours in-flight noticed a few drops of oil on windshield. Checked oil pressures. It was decreasing rapidly. Made a precautionary landing on a straight and level stretch of highway 287. Taxied into a turnoff off the highway. Dipstick showed 1-2 quarts left, left side of air frame covered with oil. With assistance from wyoming sheriff and state police, got 7 quarts of oil at lander FBO. Cleaned plane, refilled oil (oil temperature had not risen), started engine, runup ok. Police stopped traffic (only 3 cars). Made uneventful takeoff. Proceeded to lander. Had plane checked -- ok. Proceeded to fort bridger, wy, with no further problem. Was flying in company with 39 other aircraft on a trip along the oregon trail. 2 planes circled until determined we were in no trouble. Problem was pilot error in not adequately securing oil filler cap.

Title: PVT PLT OF AN SMA SEL ACFT MADE AN OFF ARPT LNDG ON AN INTERSTATE HWY DUE TO LOSS OF ENG OIL.
Narrative: ON FLT FROM CASPER, WY, TO FORT BRIDGER, WY, VIA LANDER, WY, OIL FILLER COVER NOT PROPERLY TIGHTENED. AFTER 1 1/2 HRS INFLT NOTICED A FEW DROPS OF OIL ON WINDSHIELD. CHKED OIL PRESSURES. IT WAS DECREASING RAPIDLY. MADE A PRECAUTIONARY LNDG ON A STRAIGHT AND LEVEL STRETCH OF HWY 287. TAXIED INTO A TURNOFF OFF THE HWY. DIPSTICK SHOWED 1-2 QUARTS LEFT, L SIDE OF AIR FRAME COVERED WITH OIL. WITH ASSISTANCE FROM WYOMING SHERIFF AND STATE POLICE, GOT 7 QUARTS OF OIL AT LANDER FBO. PROCEEDED TO FORT BRIDGER, WY, WITH NO FURTHER PROB. WAS FLYING IN COMPANY WITH 39 OTHER ACFT ON A TRIP ALONG THE OREGON TRAIL. 2 PLANES CIRCLED UNTIL DETERMINED WE WERE IN NO TROUBLE. PROB WAS PLT ERROR IN NOT ADEQUATELY SECURING OIL FILLER CAP.
