Narrative:
(Cfii on board for training flight).this was to be my long cross country flight for my IFR training. We were traveling from bjc to saf and within 25-30 KM from santa flight engineer. First indication was the RPM: being pegged. We pulled the propeller almost all the way off before the RPM's dropped to 2600. We checked the oil pressure and it was headed down to 0 fast. We were vectored back to las vegas. At the edge of town the engine started shaking real bad and we shut it down immediately. We were able to do a power off landing on I-25 and then we towed to the airport 6-8 mi away. No injuries, no property damage. We took the side cowling off and found one oil return line off (the nut came loose) and the other oil return ready to fall off! The oil return lines on the other side were tight and had no problem. The engine manufacturer said if the lines would have been installed properly, this could not have happened.
