Narrative:
While on the quiet bridge visual to runway 28R at sfo, the following occurred. At approximately 1200 ft MSL our TCASII issued a TA. The TCASII was set on the 5 mi range scale. The solid amber circle covered the aircraft. Left quarter of our aircraft as depicted on the TCASII screen. 2 or 3 seconds later, an RA was given with the 'descend' aural command. The captain disconnected the autoplt and increased our descent rate. At this time TCASII indicated the traffic was 200 ft above us and descending. Within 5 seconds we both saw an medium large transport off our left wing, level, 200 ft away, and slowly passing us. I thought he was going for runway 28R as at this time I checked our track to the runway and saw that we were lined up to the right of the taxiway outbound of runway 28R, though at a slight angle toward the runway (left). At about this time the captain began a go around. The sight of another aircraft that close to ours was rather unnerving. Information from ATIS, approach, or local controllers as to expect a formation type flight down the final approach would have made for a much better operation.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: CAPT OF AN LGT ACR ACFT WENT AROUND FROM A SIDE-BY-SIDE VISUAL APCH IN RESPONSE TO A TCASII RA CAUSED BY THE ACFT ON THE ADJACENT PARALLEL RWY VISUAL APCH.
Narrative: WHILE ON THE QUIET BRIDGE VISUAL TO RWY 28R AT SFO, THE FOLLOWING OCCURRED. AT APPROX 1200 FT MSL OUR TCASII ISSUED A TA. THE TCASII WAS SET ON THE 5 MI RANGE SCALE. THE SOLID AMBER CIRCLE COVERED THE ACFT. L QUARTER OF OUR ACFT AS DEPICTED ON THE TCASII SCREEN. 2 OR 3 SECONDS LATER, AN RA WAS GIVEN WITH THE 'DSND' AURAL COMMAND. THE CAPT DISCONNECTED THE AUTOPLT AND INCREASED OUR DSCNT RATE. AT THIS TIME TCASII INDICATED THE TFC WAS 200 FT ABOVE US AND DSNDING. WITHIN 5 SECONDS WE BOTH SAW AN MLG OFF OUR L WING, LEVEL, 200 FT AWAY, AND SLOWLY PASSING US. I THOUGHT HE WAS GOING FOR RWY 28R AS AT THIS TIME I CHKED OUR TRACK TO THE RWY AND SAW THAT WE WERE LINED UP TO THE R OF THE TXWY OUTBOUND OF RWY 28R, THOUGH AT A SLIGHT ANGLE TOWARD THE RWY (L). AT ABOUT THIS TIME THE CAPT BEGAN A GAR. THE SIGHT OF ANOTHER ACFT THAT CLOSE TO OURS WAS RATHER UNNERVING. INFO FROM ATIS, APCH, OR LCL CTLRS AS TO EXPECT A FORMATION TYPE FLT DOWN THE FINAL APCH WOULD HAVE MADE FOR A MUCH BETTER OP.
