Narrative:
XA08Z called ground control. Requested taxi to runway 19R. Was told that due to traffic I would have to use runway 1L tonight. Taxi to runway 1L via taxiway a. XA12Z sbound on taxiway a, almost abeam A-8 highspd taxi for runway 19R (reverse highspd for runway 1L). Ground: 'if you can take an intersection departure turn at the next taxiway and call tower immediately -- they want to try to get you out before an arrival on a 5 mi final.' they had previously indicated that there was substantial traffic in line for runway 1L (landing traffic). XA13Z I saw: the taxiway widened, an apparent break in the taxiway lights, the A-8 taxiway sign. Due in part to residual dew and mist on the windshield (especially near the center spar), and other supporting visual cues, I 'saw' what I was looking for, the turnoff for A-8. When I saw grass ahead of me in the beam of my taxi light, I immediately started a turn back to the left (to the center of taxiway a). I never saw the light prior to impact. I immediately told ground control that I would be taxiing back to the ramp. XA15Z while taxiing in, called ramp to request a marshaller and indicated that I would not be able to fly tonight.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: PLT OF AN SMT SEL TURBOPROP ACR ACFT INADVERTENTLY TAXIED INTO A TXWY LIGHT RESULTING IN DAMAGE TO THE PROP AND TERMINATING THE FLT.
Narrative: XA08Z CALLED GND CTL. REQUESTED TAXI TO RWY 19R. WAS TOLD THAT DUE TO TFC I WOULD HAVE TO USE RWY 1L TONIGHT. TAXI TO RWY 1L VIA TXWY A. XA12Z SBOUND ON TXWY A, ALMOST ABEAM A-8 HIGHSPD TAXI FOR RWY 19R (REVERSE HIGHSPD FOR RWY 1L). GND: 'IF YOU CAN TAKE AN INTXN DEP TURN AT THE NEXT TXWY AND CALL TWR IMMEDIATELY -- THEY WANT TO TRY TO GET YOU OUT BEFORE AN ARR ON A 5 MI FINAL.' THEY HAD PREVIOUSLY INDICATED THAT THERE WAS SUBSTANTIAL TFC IN LINE FOR RWY 1L (LNDG TFC). XA13Z I SAW: THE TXWY WIDENED, AN APPARENT BREAK IN THE TXWY LIGHTS, THE A-8 TXWY SIGN. DUE IN PART TO RESIDUAL DEW AND MIST ON THE WINDSHIELD (ESPECIALLY NEAR THE CTR SPAR), AND OTHER SUPPORTING VISUAL CUES, I 'SAW' WHAT I WAS LOOKING FOR, THE TURNOFF FOR A-8. WHEN I SAW GRASS AHEAD OF ME IN THE BEAM OF MY TAXI LIGHT, I IMMEDIATELY STARTED A TURN BACK TO THE L (TO THE CTR OF TXWY A). I NEVER SAW THE LIGHT PRIOR TO IMPACT. I IMMEDIATELY TOLD GND CTL THAT I WOULD BE TAXIING BACK TO THE RAMP. XA15Z WHILE TAXIING IN, CALLED RAMP TO REQUEST A MARSHALLER AND INDICATED THAT I WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO FLY TONIGHT.
