Narrative:
Aircraft was cleared to land out of the localizer 22 approach, either straight in or circling. Pilot opted to land on runway 4 but instead landed on runway 9. Pilot had mentally prepared himself to land on runway 9 due to winds (080/12 on the ATIS) before advising tower of intention to circle and land. Landing executed without incident. Neither tower person nor copilot (ATP) commented about which runway aircraft was making final approach to. After landing rollout, tower asked if pilot intended to land on runway 4. Comments aside from no questions from either tower or copilot until after landing was completed, pilot should have been more alert to his thought and talk. Tower cleared aircraft to land straight in or circle to runway 4. Pilot was thinking circle to runway 9 but responded runway 4 -- power of suggestion having heard runway 4 from tower. Copilot was chided for not speaking up. No consequences other than bruised ego.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: CPR PIC IN AN ERROR ADMITTED WRONG RWY APCH LNDG. UNAUTH LNDG.
Narrative: ACFT WAS CLRED TO LAND OUT OF THE LOC 22 APCH, EITHER STRAIGHT IN OR CIRCLING. PLT OPTED TO LAND ON RWY 4 BUT INSTEAD LANDED ON RWY 9. PLT HAD MENTALLY PREPARED HIMSELF TO LAND ON RWY 9 DUE TO WINDS (080/12 ON THE ATIS) BEFORE ADVISING TWR OF INTENTION TO CIRCLE AND LAND. LNDG EXECUTED WITHOUT INCIDENT. NEITHER TWR PERSON NOR COPLT (ATP) COMMENTED ABOUT WHICH RWY ACFT WAS MAKING FINAL APCH TO. AFTER LNDG ROLLOUT, TWR ASKED IF PLT INTENDED TO LAND ON RWY 4. COMMENTS ASIDE FROM NO QUESTIONS FROM EITHER TWR OR COPLT UNTIL AFTER LNDG WAS COMPLETED, PLT SHOULD HAVE BEEN MORE ALERT TO HIS THOUGHT AND TALK. TWR CLRED ACFT TO LAND STRAIGHT IN OR CIRCLE TO RWY 4. PLT WAS THINKING CIRCLE TO RWY 9 BUT RESPONDED RWY 4 -- PWR OF SUGGESTION HAVING HEARD RWY 4 FROM TWR. COPLT WAS CHIDED FOR NOT SPEAKING UP. NO CONSEQUENCES OTHER THAN BRUISED EGO.
