Narrative:

Oct/sat/93, the san fernando valley chapter sponsored an air proficiency and safety oriented air derby. The valley air derby originated out of vny with about 6 airports to fly over for identify with 1 mandatory stop for fuel. One of the airports was george air force base. I was told that the base was deserted and is considered closed, and that permission was granted to land and be at the airport for the fly-bys. I was an assigned spotter. A spotter is one who checks the derby numbers on the airplane as they fly over the airport. With assurance that permission was given to land and be there, we departed from vny and landed at george at about 10 am. Within 30 mins someone came up to us to check to see if there were any problems. Then, within a short time, another man drove to where we were and said we did not have permission to land because he was the one to give permission and he had not been contacted. We explained why we were there, and who had told us that they had gotten permission. We explained we were volunteers to help in this air derby, and that we would be happy to depart, which we did. I landed there with good faith that all of the permissions had been met. I observed all regulations and safety precautions regarding landing at an uncontrolled airport.

Title: PLT OF AN SMA SINGLE ENG LAND ACFT LANDED AT A CLOSED ARPT WITHOUT PERMISSION.

Narrative: OCT/SAT/93, THE SAN FERNANDO VALLEY CHAPTER SPONSORED AN AIR PROFICIENCY AND SAFETY ORIENTED AIR DERBY. THE VALLEY AIR DERBY ORIGINATED OUT OF VNY WITH ABOUT 6 ARPTS TO FLY OVER FOR IDENT WITH 1 MANDATORY STOP FOR FUEL. ONE OF THE ARPTS WAS GEORGE AIR FORCE BASE. A SPOTTER IS ONE WHO CHKS THE DERBY NUMBERS ON THE AIRPLANE AS THEY FLY OVER THE ARPT. WITH ASSURANCE THAT PERMISSION WAS GIVEN TO LAND AND BE THERE, WE DEPARTED FROM VNY AND LANDED AT GEORGE AT ABOUT 10 AM. WITHIN 30 MINS SOMEONE CAME UP TO US TO CHK TO SEE IF THERE WERE ANY PROBS. I OBSERVED ALL REGS AND SAFETY PRECAUTIONS REGARDING LNDG AT AN UNCTLED ARPT.
