Narrative:

During a simulated loss of power demonstration over farm field, the aircraft struck a small gauge wire of unknown type or usage. Flight phase was descent to forced landing/transition to climb out after positive determination that landing would be without incident. Approximately elevation at impact 2200 ft AGL. The cause of the problem: pilot error. Descent below altitude which prevented recovery before striking wire. Unfamiliar with aircraft performance. Weight and balance plus climb performance was calculated for the flight prior to takeoff at book value. Poor selection of demonstration site. Note: wire was not visible and poles were obscured by trees. To prevent recurrence, any further flight shall be conducted in accordance to regulations specified in far 91 and better judgement. Fortunately there was only superficial damage to the right wing leading edge and a nick on the propeller.

Title: SMA CFI HITS WIRE IN PRACTICE LOW ALT OP OF FORCED LNDG NEAR A FARMER'S FIELD.

Narrative: DURING A SIMULATED LOSS OF PWR DEMONSTRATION OVER FARM FIELD, THE ACFT STRUCK A SMALL GAUGE WIRE OF UNKNOWN TYPE OR USAGE. FLT PHASE WAS DSCNT TO FORCED LNDG/TRANSITION TO CLBOUT AFTER POSITIVE DETERMINATION THAT LNDG WOULD BE WITHOUT INCIDENT. APPROX ELEVATION AT IMPACT 2200 FT AGL. THE CAUSE OF THE PROB: PLT ERROR. DSCNT BELOW ALT WHICH PREVENTED RECOVERY BEFORE STRIKING WIRE. UNFAMILIAR WITH ACFT PERFORMANCE. WT AND BAL PLUS CLB PERFORMANCE WAS CALCULATED FOR THE FLT PRIOR TO TKOF AT BOOK VALUE. POOR SELECTION OF DEMONSTRATION SITE. NOTE: WIRE WAS NOT VISIBLE AND POLES WERE OBSCURED BY TREES. TO PREVENT RECURRENCE, ANY FURTHER FLT SHALL BE CONDUCTED IN ACCORDANCE TO REGS SPECIFIED IN FAR 91 AND BETTER JUDGEMENT. FORTUNATELY THERE WAS ONLY SUPERFICIAL DAMAGE TO THE R WING LEADING EDGE AND A NICK ON THE PROP.
