Narrative:
Flight rdd to eug to pdx. While taxiing for departure on runway 34 we picked up our clearance to eug. (No clearance delivery.) the departure procedure issued was not the normal SID we usually get. As we stopped at the hold line, tower informed us that there was opposite direction traffic departing runway 16 and inbound traffic IFR from the south. I concluded there would be a delay for takeoff to accommodate the other 2 aircraft. The first officer and I pulled out our charts to find the intersection where we were assigned to proceed. The tower then contacted us, again after the traffic had departed runway 16. The first officer did not read back the instruction, but instead answered only with our call sign. As I glanced out the window I saw the lights of the inbound traffic from the south, and concluded that tower was trying to hurry us out before he landed. As we lifted off the tower told us we had only been cleared 'into position and hold.' in looking back I cannot recall with certainty what was given, as I was distracted with the departure procedure. From now on I will insist on complete readbacks of all clrncs issued whether received by me or my first officer. There was no conflict with any other traffic.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: FLC OF AN SMT ACR ACFT INADVERTENTLY TKOF WITHOUT TKOF CLRNC.
Narrative: FLT RDD TO EUG TO PDX. WHILE TAXIING FOR DEP ON RWY 34 WE PICKED UP OUR CLRNC TO EUG. (NO CLRNC DELIVERY.) THE DEP PROC ISSUED WAS NOT THE NORMAL SID WE USUALLY GET. AS WE STOPPED AT THE HOLD LINE, TWR INFORMED US THAT THERE WAS OPPOSITE DIRECTION TFC DEPARTING RWY 16 AND INBOUND TFC IFR FROM THE S. I CONCLUDED THERE WOULD BE A DELAY FOR TKOF TO ACCOMMODATE THE OTHER 2 ACFT. THE FO AND I PULLED OUT OUR CHARTS TO FIND THE INTXN WHERE WE WERE ASSIGNED TO PROCEED. THE TWR THEN CONTACTED US, AGAIN AFTER THE TFC HAD DEPARTED RWY 16. THE FO DID NOT READ BACK THE INSTRUCTION, BUT INSTEAD ANSWERED ONLY WITH OUR CALL SIGN. AS I GLANCED OUT THE WINDOW I SAW THE LIGHTS OF THE INBOUND TFC FROM THE S, AND CONCLUDED THAT TWR WAS TRYING TO HURRY US OUT BEFORE HE LANDED. AS WE LIFTED OFF THE TWR TOLD US WE HAD ONLY BEEN CLRED 'INTO POS AND HOLD.' IN LOOKING BACK I CANNOT RECALL WITH CERTAINTY WHAT WAS GIVEN, AS I WAS DISTRACTED WITH THE DEP PROC. FROM NOW ON I WILL INSIST ON COMPLETE READBACKS OF ALL CLRNCS ISSUED WHETHER RECEIVED BY ME OR MY FO. THERE WAS NO CONFLICT WITH ANY OTHER TFC.
