Narrative:
Smelled smoke in cockpit while being vectored for ILS dtw runway 21R. Told approach we needed early turn on due to smoke in cockpit. While turning onto base, discovered source of problem was plastic bag that had fallen against hot bleed air duct. I went back and moved bag away from duct. Returned to cockpit, did final approach checklist and landed. After turning off runway, realized we hadn't contacted tower for landing clearance. In the future, I will add 'landing clearance' to my mental checklist that I do at 200 ft to double-check gear down and flaps full. Tower said no conflict existed with other traffic.
