Narrative:
During landing roll (runway 36) dca, tower asked if I could turn off onto runway 33. As their request was based on tightly spaced traffic, this would clear the runway sooner for the next landing aircraft. I slowed and made the turn onto runway 33. The troublesome part of my exit from runway 36 to runway 33 is the path I took to clear runway 36. As the wedge shaped paving on the northwest corner of runway 36/33 is extensive and appears continuous to both runways, I taxied across the area with the light to my left. The tower didn't mind and thanked me for clearing quickly. My concern is that the edge is not marked clearly as a 'no-taxi' area and if it is acceptable for taxi, the light should not be raised or at least better marked. During poor vision conditions the amount of area for taxi as well as the light could be hard to see. I would suggest a flashlight as well as clear paint lines in the wedge area.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AN ACR LGT TAXIED AROUND A TXWY LIGHT WITHOUT ANY ADVERSE CONSEQUENCES.
Narrative: DURING LNDG ROLL (RWY 36) DCA, TWR ASKED IF I COULD TURN OFF ONTO RWY 33. AS THEIR REQUEST WAS BASED ON TIGHTLY SPACED TFC, THIS WOULD CLR THE RWY SOONER FOR THE NEXT LNDG ACFT. I SLOWED AND MADE THE TURN ONTO RWY 33. THE TROUBLESOME PART OF MY EXIT FROM RWY 36 TO RWY 33 IS THE PATH I TOOK TO CLR RWY 36. AS THE WEDGE SHAPED PAVING ON THE NW CORNER OF RWY 36/33 IS EXTENSIVE AND APPEARS CONTINUOUS TO BOTH RWYS, I TAXIED ACROSS THE AREA WITH THE LIGHT TO MY L. THE TWR DIDN'T MIND AND THANKED ME FOR CLRING QUICKLY. MY CONCERN IS THAT THE EDGE IS NOT MARKED CLRLY AS A 'NO-TAXI' AREA AND IF IT IS ACCEPTABLE FOR TAXI, THE LIGHT SHOULD NOT BE RAISED OR AT LEAST BETTER MARKED. DURING POOR VISION CONDITIONS THE AMOUNT OF AREA FOR TAXI AS WELL AS THE LIGHT COULD BE HARD TO SEE. I WOULD SUGGEST A FLASHLIGHT AS WELL AS CLR PAINT LINES IN THE WEDGE AREA.
