Narrative:
Taxiing out for a night takeoff, the first officer selected an improper flap setting. After being cleared for takeoff throttles were advanced and takeoff warning horn sounded. We taxied clear of the runway, corrected the problem and continued the flight. Contributing factors: 1) company policy of completing checklists on the move to save time seriously divides the captain's attention. 2) aircraft differences. Flap setting chosen by first officer is the preferred setting for 98 percent of all line takeoffs on this fleet. Aircraft in question is one of the few left to be modified. Corrective actions: complete all checklists while stationary, particularly at night.
