Narrative:

VFR training flight andalusia (normally non-tower operations) had a temporary control tower (class D airspace). At about 2800 ft AGL, asked for a forced landing practice procedure. Student did not make runway and went around. During approach, the aircraft was flown in a 1 1/2 turn spiral -- a normal procedure. We asked permission to do another simulated engine out and it was approved. Again, we spiraled to a low approach and went around and asked to clear the class D airspace. We were told to call 'clear of the area' and to '...next time, fly a normal downwind pattern.' I responded that we had flown a 'normal forced landing type pattern' per our request. There was no other traffic in the area. At no time had we done anything reckless or careless. Tower (probably set up for army helicopters) should know that a forced landing from an overhead position would involve a spiral and not a standard pattern. The requests clearly stated 'practice force landing' and 'simulated engine out.'

Title: SMA PRACTICING ENG OUT LNDGS MAKES A SPIRAL APCH WHICH DISTRESSES TEMPORARY TWR CTLR.

Narrative: VFR TRAINING FLT ANDALUSIA (NORMALLY NON-TWR OPS) HAD A TEMPORARY CTL TWR (CLASS D AIRSPACE). AT ABOUT 2800 FT AGL, ASKED FOR A FORCED LNDG PRACTICE PROC. STUDENT DID NOT MAKE RWY AND WENT AROUND. DURING APCH, THE ACFT WAS FLOWN IN A 1 1/2 TURN SPIRAL -- A NORMAL PROC. WE ASKED PERMISSION TO DO ANOTHER SIMULATED ENG OUT AND IT WAS APPROVED. AGAIN, WE SPIRALED TO A LOW APCH AND WENT AROUND AND ASKED TO CLR THE CLASS D AIRSPACE. WE WERE TOLD TO CALL 'CLR OF THE AREA' AND TO '...NEXT TIME, FLY A NORMAL DOWNWIND PATTERN.' I RESPONDED THAT WE HAD FLOWN A 'NORMAL FORCED LNDG TYPE PATTERN' PER OUR REQUEST. THERE WAS NO OTHER TFC IN THE AREA. AT NO TIME HAD WE DONE ANYTHING RECKLESS OR CARELESS. TWR (PROBABLY SET UP FOR ARMY HELIS) SHOULD KNOW THAT A FORCED LNDG FROM AN OVERHEAD POS WOULD INVOLVE A SPIRAL AND NOT A STANDARD PATTERN. THE REQUESTS CLRLY STATED 'PRACTICE FORCE LNDG' AND 'SIMULATED ENG OUT.'
