Narrative:
Approximately 1 hour after leaving ewr en route to st. Maarten, the #1 HF radio transmitter failed (receiver ok). #2 transmitter rechannelized only intermittently upon changing frequencys. We obtained frequency HF 8846 and requested a phone patch to company for an advisory as to an overland (VHF reception) routing. 1 hour later, after passing our equal time point, we were relayed via arinc that an 'overland' routing would be our return flight plan to ewr. We continued 'over water' being able to transmit on #2 and receive on both. FARS should be put back into our manuals so that we may ascertain the legality of our actions.
