Narrative:
During climb to FL280 while en route from las to sna approximately 40 mi east of hec VOR while proceeding direct to the VOR, I received an elevator trim warning and the autoplt disconnected at 27800 ft while in a climb. The aircraft trim was full nose up, used emergency trim disconnect and emergency trim to stop climb. I overshot altitude by approximately 700 ft. Reported it to controller. Had to land, fly the aircraft during descent and return to FL280, undershot by 300-400 ft. Had to complete the flight with emergency trim and without the autoplt. With the type of autoplt elevator trim malfunction I had at the time it happened, there was nothing I could do to avoid overshoot of altitude and undershoot of descent while correcting the force on the stick was excessive. And the climb rate at the time of the malfunction was over 2000 FPM. The controller stated that my problem did not create a conflict with other traffic.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: FLC OF AN LTT CPR JET OVERSHOT LEVEL OFF ALT DUE TO THE MALFUNCTION OF THE AUTO-TRIM SYS.
Narrative: DURING CLB TO FL280 WHILE ENRTE FROM LAS TO SNA APPROX 40 MI E OF HEC VOR WHILE PROCEEDING DIRECT TO THE VOR, I RECEIVED AN ELEVATOR TRIM WARNING AND THE AUTOPLT DISCONNECTED AT 27800 FT WHILE IN A CLB. THE ACFT TRIM WAS FULL NOSE UP, USED EMER TRIM DISCONNECT AND EMER TRIM TO STOP CLB. I OVERSHOT ALT BY APPROX 700 FT. RPTED IT TO CTLR. HAD TO LAND, FLY THE ACFT DURING DSCNT AND RETURN TO FL280, UNDERSHOT BY 300-400 FT. HAD TO COMPLETE THE FLT WITH EMER TRIM AND WITHOUT THE AUTOPLT. WITH THE TYPE OF AUTOPLT ELEVATOR TRIM MALFUNCTION I HAD AT THE TIME IT HAPPENED, THERE WAS NOTHING I COULD DO TO AVOID OVERSHOOT OF ALT AND UNDERSHOOT OF DSCNT WHILE CORRECTING THE FORCE ON THE STICK WAS EXCESSIVE. AND THE CLB RATE AT THE TIME OF THE MALFUNCTION WAS OVER 2000 FPM. THE CTLR STATED THAT MY PROB DID NOT CREATE A CONFLICT WITH OTHER TFC.
