Narrative:
I received a class C clearance out of john wayne VFR. I proceeded on vectors until they gave me my own navigation. They couldn't hand me off to coast approach but gave me the frequency. I turned in lax VOR on my DME and my GPS and proceeded to fly outside the 25 DME limit of the los angeles class B. I was at 25.7 when the controller told an arrival jet of my traffic. I hadn't been able to cut in and talk to him previously, but I spoke up and told him I was the traffic. I told him I had the jet in sight. He told me I was in class B without a clearance and vectored me away from traffic, told me I was at 24 mi. I never got closer than 25.7 on both my DME and GPS. I apologized for the problem and resumed my own navigation. I never got close to the jet but the controller had to level him off above me until he turned me southeast. Since I wasn't talking to him because he was so busy I never knew there was a problem.
