Narrative:
Departed sna 19R on a musel 5 SID, cleared to 5000 ft. Immediately after takeoff, tower told us to maintain 2000 ft for traffic and handed us off to coast approach. Approach repeated the 2000 ft restr and advised of non-altitude transponder target crossing departure path. They thought intruder was above 2000 ft and did not have 2 way communication with it. While turning to 175 degrees heading and approching 2000 ft, we spotted intruder about 1 O'clock and crossing right to left. He appeared to be same altitude (about 1700 ft) and descending on an easterly heading. We immediately started a right turn for avoidance. The other airplane turned away from us at almost the same time. Nearest point of approach was about 3/4 of a mile. Credit should be given to heads-up alert given by ATC. Without their warning this event could have been a close call. We did receive a TA from TCASII about the time we sighted the intruder, but prior warning helped immeasurably.

Title: HAZARDS OF POTENTIAL CONFLICT REDUCED BY ADVANCE TA GIVEN BY TRACON DEP CTLR.
Narrative: DEPARTED SNA 19R ON A MUSEL 5 SID, CLRED TO 5000 FT. IMMEDIATELY AFTER TKOF, TWR TOLD US TO MAINTAIN 2000 FT FOR TFC AND HANDED US OFF TO COAST APCH. APCH REPEATED THE 2000 FT RESTR AND ADVISED OF NON-ALT XPONDER TARGET XING DEP PATH. THEY THOUGHT INTRUDER WAS ABOVE 2000 FT AND DID NOT HAVE 2 WAY COM WITH IT. WHILE TURNING TO 175 DEGS HDG AND APPROCHING 2000 FT, WE SPOTTED INTRUDER ABOUT 1 O'CLOCK AND XING R TO L. HE APPEARED TO BE SAME ALT (ABOUT 1700 FT) AND DSNDING ON AN EASTERLY HDG. WE IMMEDIATELY STARTED A R TURN FOR AVOIDANCE. THE OTHER AIRPLANE TURNED AWAY FROM US AT ALMOST THE SAME TIME. NEAREST POINT OF APCH WAS ABOUT 3/4 OF A MILE.
