Narrative:
We arrived in bna with rain and freezing rain occurring. Our ground personnel applied deicing fluid when we arrived in an effort to keep wing and tail icing to a minimum while we sat at the gate. At departure time, we had more fluid applied and left the gate. On taxi out, we noticed the precipitation had ceased or was very light. After we were airborne, we discussed the deicing procedure and came to realize that we had not done the pre-departure check of the aircraft surfaces. Flight continued on as scheduled. I feel the problem encountered is typical of the confusion with standard and required checks that are supposed to be accomplished in icing conditions.
