Narrative:
While leveling off at FL350 left engine compressor stalled (loud pop). Left throttle immediately retarded to idle. Egt continued to rise rapidly. Fuel lever (left engine) moved to off, as egt approached 700 degrees. After engine shut off egt peaked at 800 degrees. Time from initial indications to engine fuel shutoff was approximately 10 seconds. ATC notified for immediate descent to FL190. Declared an emergency. Requested information (WX) for tys, bna, sdf. Also called company dispatcher for WX information regarding landing airports. Nashville and knoxville WX was marginal and we proceeded to sdf due to better WX. All checklists accomplished in accordance with pilot operating manual. Passenger notified of problem and intentions to land at sdf. Uneventful landing made at sdf. Postflt maintenance inspection revealed N1 turbine failure.
