Narrative:
Aircraft would not pressurize after takeoff. Coordinated with ATC for leveloff and delay vectors. Tried standby pressurization. Checked quick reference handbook. No door warnings. Flight attendants reported loud air noise from aircraft left main cabin door. Returned ewr. Maintenance found door handle left down and locked but door not properly seated. Checking with 'a' flight attendant, found that on departure door was hard to close, but that he was able to get handle down and locked. Cockpit had no abnormal indications of impending problem. Recommend that flight attendants be instructed to always advise cockpit of problems when closing and/or securing an aircraft door, as door warning lights can be out with door not properly seated.
