Narrative:
Flight was in cessna 172 aircraft which had been recently equipped with a 180 hp engine (less than 50 hours on engine). Aircraft had standard fuel tanks (40 gallons usable). Cross country flight originated at tmb with its intended destination being tlh. At 3.1 hours into flight, sputtered for unknown cause. Decision was made to make a precautionary landing on united states 98 which road was immediately beneath aircraft. Tlh approach was notified of intentions. Emergency procedure were initiated and engine was kept running by changing to left fuel tank from both position. Normal landing was made on the highway. No personal injuries, aircraft damage or other property occurred. Problem was determined to be high fuel consumption and low fuel. Engine was still in the break-in period. Engine specifications stated that 10.1 gallons at 6000 ft cruise altitude at 2650 RPM. The aircraft was flown at 2600 RPM at 6000 ft. Fuel was delivered to the aircraft, road was blocked and aircraft took off from road and cont its intended flight. Fuel tanks had been checked prior to flight and were full.

Title: PLT OF SMA CAP ACFT MADE AN EMER LNDG ON A HWY WHEN THE ENG BEGAN QUITTING DUE TO FUEL STARVATION EXHAUSTION. THE ACFT WAS NOT DAMAGED NOR WERE THERE ANY INJURIES.
Narrative: FLT WAS IN CESSNA 172 ACFT WHICH HAD BEEN RECENTLY EQUIPPED WITH A 180 HP ENG (LESS THAN 50 HRS ON ENG). ACFT HAD STANDARD FUEL TANKS (40 GALLONS USABLE). XCOUNTRY FLT ORIGINATED AT TMB WITH ITS INTENDED DEST BEING TLH. AT 3.1 HRS INTO FLT, SPUTTERED FOR UNKNOWN CAUSE. DECISION WAS MADE TO MAKE A PRECAUTIONARY LNDG ON UNITED STATES 98 WHICH ROAD WAS IMMEDIATELY BENEATH ACFT. TLH APCH WAS NOTIFIED OF INTENTIONS. EMER PROC WERE INITIATED AND ENG WAS KEPT RUNNING BY CHANGING TO L FUEL TANK FROM BOTH POS. NORMAL LNDG WAS MADE ON THE HWY. NO PERSONAL INJURIES, ACFT DAMAGE OR OTHER PROPERTY OCCURRED. PROB WAS DETERMINED TO BE HIGH FUEL CONSUMPTION AND LOW FUEL. ENG WAS STILL IN THE BREAK-IN PERIOD. ENG SPECS STATED THAT 10.1 GALLONS AT 6000 FT CRUISE ALT AT 2650 RPM. THE ACFT WAS FLOWN AT 2600 RPM AT 6000 FT. FUEL WAS DELIVERED TO THE ACFT, ROAD WAS BLOCKED AND ACFT TOOK OFF FROM ROAD AND CONT ITS INTENDED FLT. FUEL TANKS HAD BEEN CHKED PRIOR TO FLT AND WERE FULL.
