Narrative:
While at 800 ft AGL on the final approach to runway 9R at ord, tower suddenly cleared a 747 that was holding short of 9R to cross left to right across the runway. My first officer and I prepared first officer a go around as we knew that the 747 was unlikely to clear the runway in time. At 200 ft AGL, the 747 was still half-way across our runway so we had to execute the go around. Tower should have known better than to expect a widebody transport jet to be able to cross a runway that quickly with another aircraft on short final. If I had been the pilot of the 747, I would never have accepted the crossing clearance.

Narrative: WHILE AT 800 FT AGL ON THE FINAL APCH TO RWY 9R AT ORD, TWR SUDDENLY CLRED A 747 THAT WAS HOLDING SHORT OF 9R TO CROSS L TO R ACROSS THE RWY. MY FO AND I PREPARED FO A GAR AS WE KNEW THAT THE 747 WAS UNLIKELY TO CLR THE RWY IN TIME. AT 200 FT AGL, THE 747 WAS STILL HALF-WAY ACROSS OUR RWY SO WE HAD TO EXECUTE THE GAR. TWR SHOULD HAVE KNOWN BETTER THAN TO EXPECT A WDB JET TO BE ABLE TO CROSS A RWY THAT QUICKLY WITH ANOTHER ACFT ON SHORT FINAL. IF I HAD BEEN THE PLT OF THE 747, I WOULD NEVER HAVE ACCEPTED THE XING CLRNC.
