Narrative:
On the apr/xx/94 at approximately XA05Z at FL280 and 90 mi east of will rogers VOR we had requested to deviate south of a line of thunderstorms and was given a center issued heading of 260 degrees. Our WX radar clearly indicated we would pass well to the south of the line and was painting no WX along our flight path. Suddenly and without warning we encountered severe turbulence and heavy rain. The aircraft pitched up violently and was climbing at a high rate. At 28300 ft the first officer disconnected the autoplt as it was his leg and attempted to maintain wings level and 0 degree pitch. I reduced the throttles to approximately 1.2 eprs to control aircraft speed. Even with all these actions taken, the aircraft was climbing unctlably. At approximately 28900 ft we flew out of this turbulence and rain and was able to regain control of the aircraft and returned to FL280. We estimate this encounter lasted no more than 10 seconds. Center called and questioned our altitude deviation and we advised them of our situation. We encountered no WX after this incident and the remainder of the flight was uneventful.

Title: TEMPORARY LOSS OF ACFT CTL IN A NIGHT OP.
Narrative: ON THE APR/XX/94 AT APPROX XA05Z AT FL280 AND 90 MI E OF WILL ROGERS VOR WE HAD REQUESTED TO DEVIATE S OF A LINE OF TSTMS AND WAS GIVEN A CTR ISSUED HDG OF 260 DEGS. OUR WX RADAR CLRLY INDICATED WE WOULD PASS WELL TO THE S OF THE LINE AND WAS PAINTING NO WX ALONG OUR FLT PATH. SUDDENLY AND WITHOUT WARNING WE ENCOUNTERED SEVERE TURB AND HVY RAIN. THE ACFT PITCHED UP VIOLENTLY AND WAS CLBING AT A HIGH RATE. AT 28300 FT THE FO DISCONNECTED THE AUTOPLT AS IT WAS HIS LEG AND ATTEMPTED TO MAINTAIN WINGS LEVEL AND 0 DEG PITCH. I REDUCED THE THROTTLES TO APPROX 1.2 EPRS TO CTL ACFT SPD. EVEN WITH ALL THESE ACTIONS TAKEN, THE ACFT WAS CLBING UNCTLABLY. AT APPROX 28900 FT WE FLEW OUT OF THIS TURB AND RAIN AND WAS ABLE TO REGAIN CTL OF THE ACFT AND RETURNED TO FL280. WE ESTIMATE THIS ENCOUNTER LASTED NO MORE THAN 10 SECONDS. CTR CALLED AND QUESTIONED OUR ALTDEV AND WE ADVISED THEM OF OUR SIT. WE ENCOUNTERED NO WX AFTER THIS INCIDENT AND THE REMAINDER OF THE FLT WAS UNEVENTFUL.
