Narrative:
During the climb-out to assigned altitude of FL370, aircraft was level at 16000 MSL, by center, for traffic. VFR traffic advised at 1 O'clock, 16500, 10 mi, by center. Traffic observed on TCASII, along with additional IFR traffic at 16000 MSL same position. Center requested, 'do we have traffic.' first officer (me) observed traffic at 1 O'clock, however mistook larger aircraft at 16000 MSL as VFR traffic. Center advised climb FL230, pilot's discretion. During start of climb to FL230, TCASII advised 'monitor vertical climb,' immediately followed by 'climb, climb.' PF initiated 2500 FPM climb, and at 17700 MSL observed light twin pass under nose of aircraft. Separation was sufficient (1200 ft), however, if TCASII not installed, probably would have been a very close encounter. Mistakes: center should not have had VFR traffic within 500 ft separation in IFR corridor. PNF assumed larger aircraft at position indicated by center and confirmed by TCASII was in fact small VFR traffic. Haze and clouds made identify of smaller aircraft very difficult. Thanks for TCASII.

Title: A GRATEFUL FLC THANKS TCASII RA FOR TURNING A NMAC INTO A POTENTIAL CONFLICT IN A 'VMC CLIMB' THROUGH OCCUPIED ALT.
Narrative: DURING THE CLB-OUT TO ASSIGNED ALT OF FL370, ACFT WAS LEVEL AT 16000 MSL, BY CTR, FOR TFC. VFR TFC ADVISED AT 1 O'CLOCK, 16500, 10 MI, BY CTR. TFC OBSERVED ON TCASII, ALONG WITH ADDITIONAL IFR TFC AT 16000 MSL SAME POS. CTR REQUESTED, 'DO WE HAVE TFC.' FO (ME) OBSERVED TFC AT 1 O'CLOCK, HOWEVER MISTOOK LARGER ACFT AT 16000 MSL AS VFR TFC. CTR ADVISED CLB FL230, PLT'S DISCRETION. DURING START OF CLB TO FL230, TCASII ADVISED 'MONITOR VERT CLB,' IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWED BY 'CLB, CLB.' PF INITIATED 2500 FPM CLB, AND AT 17700 MSL OBSERVED LIGHT TWIN PASS UNDER NOSE OF ACFT. SEPARATION WAS SUFFICIENT (1200 FT), HOWEVER, IF TCASII NOT INSTALLED, PROBABLY WOULD HAVE BEEN A VERY CLOSE ENCOUNTER. MISTAKES: CTR SHOULD NOT HAVE HAD VFR TFC WITHIN 500 FT SEPARATION IN IFR CORRIDOR. PNF ASSUMED LARGER ACFT AT POS INDICATED BY CTR AND CONFIRMED BY TCASII WAS IN FACT SMALL VFR TFC. HAZE AND CLOUDS MADE IDENT OF SMALLER ACFT VERY DIFFICULT. THANKS FOR TCASII.
