Narrative:
Upon exiting runway onto taxiway, pilot rolled through taxiway intersection before establishing contact with ground controller. Pilot had been distracted by question from rear passenger and dialed in wrong frequency (121.8 instead of 121.9), thus delaying contact with controller until this error was corrected. Pilot noted other aircraft on the intersecting taxiway which was almost stopped and posed no conflict so he (reporter) coasted on through intersection, then stopped and established contact on correct frequency. (Of course, correct action would have been to stop at hold line before intersection to establish contact.) ground controller informed pilot that he had gone through intersection and had cut off other aircraft. However, performance consideration was that of allowing a distraction to affect performance. As noted above, pilot should have stopped immediately after leaving runway to sort out any distrs and establish contact before proceeding.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: PLT OF SMA PVT ACFT TAXIED AFTER LNDG WITHOUT CLRNC DUE TO A WRONG FREQ SETTING.
Narrative: UPON EXITING RWY ONTO TXWY, PLT ROLLED THROUGH TXWY INTXN BEFORE ESTABLISHING CONTACT WITH GND CTLR. PLT HAD BEEN DISTRACTED BY QUESTION FROM REAR PAX AND DIALED IN WRONG FREQ (121.8 INSTEAD OF 121.9), THUS DELAYING CONTACT WITH CTLR UNTIL THIS ERROR WAS CORRECTED. PLT NOTED OTHER ACFT ON THE INTERSECTING TXWY WHICH WAS ALMOST STOPPED AND POSED NO CONFLICT SO HE (RPTR) COASTED ON THROUGH INTXN, THEN STOPPED AND ESTABLISHED CONTACT ON CORRECT FREQ. (OF COURSE, CORRECT ACTION WOULD HAVE BEEN TO STOP AT HOLD LINE BEFORE INTXN TO ESTABLISH CONTACT.) GND CTLR INFORMED PLT THAT HE HAD GONE THROUGH INTXN AND HAD CUT OFF OTHER ACFT. HOWEVER, PERFORMANCE CONSIDERATION WAS THAT OF ALLOWING A DISTR TO AFFECT PERFORMANCE. AS NOTED ABOVE, PLT SHOULD HAVE STOPPED IMMEDIATELY AFTER LEAVING RWY TO SORT OUT ANY DISTRS AND ESTABLISH CONTACT BEFORE PROCEEDING.
