Narrative:
Reporter had finished run-up and was prepared to takeoff. Reporter had heard other aircraft announce 'final' and observed other aircraft on final. Judging from apparent size of other aircraft and its low approach angle, it appeared to be on a 2-3 mi final and reporter elected to takeoff. Reporter called 'X taking the active at glens falls for immediate departure.' other aircraft then called 'Y on a short 1 mi final, glens falls.' reporter immediately stopped aircraft just past hold line on taxiway and observed other aircraft closer than originally thought. Observed other aircraft land without incident. Other aircraft was an unusual experimental type with an unusually small frontal profile and a very shallow approach and was unusually fast. Reporter was 'fooled' into thinking that other aircraft was far enough away to make a safe departure. Pilots of such aircraft should be aware of this situation and give exact position reports, ie, '1 mi final.' pilots such as reporter should be conscious of unusual aircraft in the pattern and be aware that their appearance may mislead us as to their distance.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: PVT PLT OF SMA TAXIED ONTO RWY FOR TKOF IN FRONT OF ANOTHER ACFTCONVERGING COURSES ON SHORT FINAL AT A NON CTLED ARPT.
Narrative: RPTR HAD FINISHED RUN-UP AND WAS PREPARED TO TKOF. RPTR HAD HEARD OTHER ACFT ANNOUNCE 'FINAL' AND OBSERVED OTHER ACFT ON FINAL. JUDGING FROM APPARENT SIZE OF OTHER ACFT AND ITS LOW APCH ANGLE, IT APPEARED TO BE ON A 2-3 MI FINAL AND RPTR ELECTED TO TKOF. RPTR CALLED 'X TAKING THE ACTIVE AT GLENS FALLS FOR IMMEDIATE DEP.' OTHER ACFT THEN CALLED 'Y ON A SHORT 1 MI FINAL, GLENS FALLS.' RPTR IMMEDIATELY STOPPED ACFT JUST PAST HOLD LINE ON TXWY AND OBSERVED OTHER ACFT CLOSER THAN ORIGINALLY THOUGHT. OBSERVED OTHER ACFT LAND WITHOUT INCIDENT. OTHER ACFT WAS AN UNUSUAL EXPERIMENTAL TYPE WITH AN UNUSUALLY SMALL FRONTAL PROFILE AND A VERY SHALLOW APCH AND WAS UNUSUALLY FAST. RPTR WAS 'FOOLED' INTO THINKING THAT OTHER ACFT WAS FAR ENOUGH AWAY TO MAKE A SAFE DEP. PLTS OF SUCH ACFT SHOULD BE AWARE OF THIS SIT AND GIVE EXACT POS RPTS, IE, '1 MI FINAL.' PLTS SUCH AS RPTR SHOULD BE CONSCIOUS OF UNUSUAL ACFT IN THE PATTERN AND BE AWARE THAT THEIR APPEARANCE MAY MISLEAD US AS TO THEIR DISTANCE.
