Narrative:
Taxiing to leave opa locka airshow, tower instructed me to taxi to runway 9L from junction of 9C and 36L. Upon reaching runway 9L I did not stop but turned left to back taxi. I then saw an approaching aircraft. I moved to right of runway and contacted ground who informed me of the error of my ways. The landing aircraft did a go around. The tower then had me turn around and takeoff from that point as I had more than enough room. Factors: not familiar with airport. Not thinking. Instructions from ground did not contain the phrase 'hold short' which I have become used to at my home airport (pmp). As an afterthought, I realize 'hold short' was not necessary, but I had that mind set. What I need to do from now on is to go only as far as instructed by ground or tower.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: PVT PLT OF AN SMA TAXIED ONTO THE ACTIVE RWY DUE TO FAILING TO HOLD SHORT WITHOUT SPECIFIC INSTRUCTIONS FROM TWR.
Narrative: TAXIING TO LEAVE OPA LOCKA AIRSHOW, TWR INSTRUCTED ME TO TAXI TO RWY 9L FROM JUNCTION OF 9C AND 36L. UPON REACHING RWY 9L I DID NOT STOP BUT TURNED L TO BACK TAXI. I THEN SAW AN APCHING ACFT. I MOVED TO R OF RWY AND CONTACTED GND WHO INFORMED ME OF THE ERROR OF MY WAYS. THE LNDG ACFT DID A GAR. THE TWR THEN HAD ME TURN AROUND AND TKOF FROM THAT POINT AS I HAD MORE THAN ENOUGH ROOM. FACTORS: NOT FAMILIAR WITH ARPT. NOT THINKING. INSTRUCTIONS FROM GND DID NOT CONTAIN THE PHRASE 'HOLD SHORT' WHICH I HAVE BECOME USED TO AT MY HOME ARPT (PMP). AS AN AFTERTHOUGHT, I REALIZE 'HOLD SHORT' WAS NOT NECESSARY, BUT I HAD THAT MIND SET. WHAT I NEED TO DO FROM NOW ON IS TO GO ONLY AS FAR AS INSTRUCTED BY GND OR TWR.
