Narrative:

While being marshalled into cas gate our #1 engine cowl came into contact with a portable water cart. Our taxi speed was approximately 02 mph. Aircraft was on center parking line and at normal stopping point. The person marshalling us indeed, however, called for an abrupt stop with his wands. A second marshaller was standing approximately 10 yards to the side of first marshaller on captain's side of aircraft. Had aircraft been stopped about 2 ft sooner this event would probably not have occurred. Ground vehicle avoidance guidelines at gate are drawn only for dc-9,md-80 type aircraft. Maintenance has taken appropriate corrective action.
