Narrative:
The engine was difficult to start and took some time to warm up. The engine passed the magneto check during run up and all engine instruments read normal. Shortly after takeoff (200 ft AGL) the engine hiccupped. Power returned and then dropped again at about (500 ft AGL), then power returned again. We reported a rough running engine to ATC and were immediately cleared for any runway by the tower and the tower closed the airport until we were on the ground. No further loss of power was experienced after the decision was made to return to the airport.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: PLT OF A SMA SEL RETURN TO LAND WITH ATC EMER HANDLING AFTER THE ENG LOST PWR 2 TIMES DURING INITIAL CLB AFTER TKOF.
Narrative: THE ENG WAS DIFFICULT TO START AND TOOK SOME TIME TO WARM UP. THE ENG PASSED THE MAGNETO CHK DURING RUN UP AND ALL ENG INSTS READ NORMAL. SHORTLY AFTER TKOF (200 FT AGL) THE ENG HICCUPPED. PWR RETURNED AND THEN DROPPED AGAIN AT ABOUT (500 FT AGL), THEN PWR RETURNED AGAIN. WE RPTED A ROUGH RUNNING ENG TO ATC AND WERE IMMEDIATELY CLRED FOR ANY RWY BY THE TWR AND THE TWR CLOSED THE ARPT UNTIL WE WERE ON THE GND. NO FURTHER LOSS OF PWR WAS EXPERIENCED AFTER THE DECISION WAS MADE TO RETURN TO THE ARPT.
