Narrative:
On a flight from atl to cae after takeoff, landing gear retracted normally, but outer gear doors (on mu-2), retracted slowly. During approach to landing in cae, gear extended normally (3 green), but red light did not extinguish, which on the MU2 indicates that the gear doors are not closed, but is still a safe condition for landing. Landing and taxi were normal. Upon postflt inspection, gear doors were found to not be retracted. Later inspection by maintenance revealed a failed gear door motor. Repair was made. Aircraft returned to service. FAA inspector who was present as we taxied up, seemed to think that this was a serious situation. I and my copilot disagree. According to the mu-2 manual, the gear is down and locked with 3 green, even if the red light is on which only indicates that the gear doors are open. Advice: FAA inspectors should be more knowledgeable about the aircraft they make judgements against, which in turn reflect on the flight crew. In my opinion, the flight crew made logical and sound decisions.

Title: MU2 HAS RED LIGHT ON INDICATING GEAR DOORS NOT CLOSED. 3 GREEN FOR GEAR ITSELF ARE INDICATED.
Narrative: ON A FLT FROM ATL TO CAE AFTER TKOF, LNDG GEAR RETRACTED NORMALLY, BUT OUTER GEAR DOORS (ON MU-2), RETRACTED SLOWLY. DURING APCH TO LNDG IN CAE, GEAR EXTENDED NORMALLY (3 GREEN), BUT RED LIGHT DID NOT EXTINGUISH, WHICH ON THE MU2 INDICATES THAT THE GEAR DOORS ARE NOT CLOSED, BUT IS STILL A SAFE CONDITION FOR LNDG. LNDG AND TAXI WERE NORMAL. UPON POSTFLT INSPECTION, GEAR DOORS WERE FOUND TO NOT BE RETRACTED. LATER INSPECTION BY MAINT REVEALED A FAILED GEAR DOOR MOTOR. REPAIR WAS MADE. ACFT RETURNED TO SVC. FAA INSPECTOR WHO WAS PRESENT AS WE TAXIED UP, SEEMED TO THINK THAT THIS WAS A SERIOUS SIT. I AND MY COPLT DISAGREE. ACCORDING TO THE MU-2 MANUAL, THE GEAR IS DOWN AND LOCKED WITH 3 GREEN, EVEN IF THE RED LIGHT IS ON WHICH ONLY INDICATES THAT THE GEAR DOORS ARE OPEN. ADVICE: FAA INSPECTORS SHOULD BE MORE KNOWLEDGEABLE ABOUT THE ACFT THEY MAKE JUDGEMENTS AGAINST, WHICH IN TURN REFLECT ON THE FLC. IN MY OPINION, THE FLC MADE LOGICAL AND SOUND DECISIONS.
