Narrative:
While taxiing to parking I was under directions from a maintenance marshaller. As I followed his visual signals out my left side my area of concentration was to my left and my immediate forward. At his signal I began a left turn back to his position which would place our aircraft between 2 other parked aircraft on the edge of the airport ramp. 1/2 way through turn the right wing struck a light standard and damaged the #8 slat. The maintenance marshaller said that the setting sun was in his eyes and he couldn't see our wingtip. Other contributing factors were the absence of any taxi or j- lines and wing walkers. Several ground personnel later stated that this was not the first time that this had happened. Supplemental information from acn 273321: as aircraft was directed into final left turn by marshaller I checked right wingtip and it appeared it would pass in front of light stand. The sun was partially a factor but it did appear the wing would clear the pole. There was no indication from the marshaller that we were too close to the light pole. Supplemental information from acn 273643: no mention of lights on 10-7 page.
