Narrative:
Controller at lax had issued us 065 degree heading when able, direct irw. We were west of pke. Approximately 10 mins later 3 tankers called for marsa and ir track clearance. Controller issued clearance to tankers, then issued us clearance direct pke direct drk then direct irw. We proceeded direct pke, when slightly north of parker made right turn to correct for northern overshoot to intercept 056 degree radial from pke 058 degree heading inbound to drake. Approximately 30-35 NM northeast of pke, and slightly south of J-78, ZAB called us and said expedite left turn heading 330 degrees because ZLA called and said you are in an active MOA. We told him we were following the last controller's instructions. ZAB said we looked like we were flying on J-74 and somebody had made a mistake. It appears to me that the lax controller cleared the tankers for marsa and ir activities while we still were in the MOA and got excited when we skirted the MOA after passing pke.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: HDG TRACK DEV. NON ADHERENCE TO ATC INSTRUCTIONS REGARDING AVOIDING THE MOA.
Narrative: CTLR AT LAX HAD ISSUED US 065 DEG HDG WHEN ABLE, DIRECT IRW. WE WERE W OF PKE. APPROX 10 MINS LATER 3 TANKERS CALLED FOR MARSA AND IR TRACK CLRNC. CTLR ISSUED CLRNC TO TANKERS, THEN ISSUED US CLRNC DIRECT PKE DIRECT DRK THEN DIRECT IRW. WE PROCEEDED DIRECT PKE, WHEN SLIGHTLY N OF PARKER MADE R TURN TO CORRECT FOR NORTHERN OVERSHOOT TO INTERCEPT 056 DEG RADIAL FROM PKE 058 DEG HDG INBOUND TO DRAKE. APPROX 30-35 NM NE OF PKE, AND SLIGHTLY S OF J-78, ZAB CALLED US AND SAID EXPEDITE L TURN HDG 330 DEGS BECAUSE ZLA CALLED AND SAID YOU ARE IN AN ACTIVE MOA. WE TOLD HIM WE WERE FOLLOWING THE LAST CTLR'S INSTRUCTIONS. ZAB SAID WE LOOKED LIKE WE WERE FLYING ON J-74 AND SOMEBODY HAD MADE A MISTAKE. IT APPEARS TO ME THAT THE LAX CTLR CLRED THE TANKERS FOR MARSA AND IR ACTIVITIES WHILE WE STILL WERE IN THE MOA AND GOT EXCITED WHEN WE SKIRTED THE MOA AFTER PASSING PKE.
