Narrative:
I had just returned from 23 days of vacation. During the first 2 legs of the trip no unusual occurrences. All checklists were followed and FARS and company operation specifications followed. We were completing the before start checklist when we were interrupted by the gate agent. At this point, the first officer (me) calls fuel/hydraulic quantities 15200 pounds check and the captain responds. Both of us confirming the fuel required, (obviously, we both did not confirm the fuel load), which was a minimum of 10200 pounds required. We completed the before start checklist and pushed back. After start checklist completed and before takeoff checklist completed 'down to the line' items. We were cleared for takeoff. I made the cabin announcement and then read the 'line items.' one of the 'line items is minimum takeoff fuel. As I made this call, we both realized that we only had 8000 pounds of fuel. We declined the takeoff clearance and returned to the gate receive more fuel.
