Narrative:
In clouds at 23000 ft encountered severe turbulence -- violent enough to disengage autoplt. A climb rate of plus 6000 FPM was finally stopped at 24300 ft. An emergency with center was declared and 7700 squawked. Our radar seemed to be operating normally with the closest cell over 20 NM away.
