Narrative:
ATC cleared us from 5000 ft to 16000 ft. I missed captain's readback because I had slid seat back to adjust cabin temperatures. We leveled at 6000 ft. I had not heard 16000 ft for sure and thought I must have heard wrong. About 2 mins later we got a conflict alert on TCASII. We turned left 30 degrees and avoided the traffic. ATC told us it was known VFR at 5500 ft. Turns out we had been cleared to 16000 ft! After 33 yrs of checking and double checking, I let my guard down! I am not sure if the first officer who was flying heard the assigned altitude. From now on I will be a pilot first and an so last!
