Narrative:

Departing clt for bwi on runway 18L just prior to taking runway for takeoff aircraft behind us said we may have ingested a piece of cardboard, saw short puff of smoke then cleared up, at this point we were cleared for takeoff. The captain and I decided the smoke was due to the engine start and we had not run the engine high enough to suck any foreign object damage into it. We took the runway ran engine up, all indications were normal. Released the brakes as aircraft accelerated a loud air sound was heard from left side of plane. Engines were at takeoff power and indications were normal. Rejected takeoff, returned to gate. Pieces of cardboard were on vanes of engine. The piece of foreign object damage had to be of some size. The crew that saw it might have been more informative as to the size and that it could not be part of a normal start.
